Sant Mateu Festivity

The town of Sant Mateu holds its festival on 21 September. The events in commemoration of Matthew the Apostle include a popular procession leaving from the church and embarking on a short tour of the town. Traditional country dancing displays are followed by other fun activities for travellers, such as tasting orelletes (donut-like local treats) and local wine produced in the region, famed for its vineyards. In the evening, concerts are often held and Pla de Sant Mateu’s natural setting, sweeping, fertile farmlands, provides the backdrop for athletes to compete in the different races organised during the festival. Nordic walking, fun runs and other sports events attract large numbers of competitors. The festivities programme is completed with more activities such as theatre performances and excursions, popular championships and tastings.
